EEmerald Empire Hempfest: Day 2
On day two I had the opportunity to learn the true meaning of Hempfest. According to Normal Bean, it’s a network of community gatherings in support of the legalization of Hemp in all of its form. It’s the front line of the Marijuana War between communities and local governments.
Normal told me about how some municipalities (including Eugene) do everything they can to prevent these gatherings from taking place within the city. Local governments use the usual political tactics to do things like obstruct advertising, limit space and access, and even run tornado sirens on an hourly basis to run the activists off.
In some locations throwing a Hempfest is nothing short of a covert tactical operation involving entry by Trojan Horse, pre-planned escape routes, and custom gear. But it’s all worth it when the city councilmen standing next to you while the stage is being torn down apologize saying, “We’re sorry for the trouble. We expected something different.”
That’s a battle where everybody wins...
Then there are places where they invite you to remove the word “hemp” from the title of the event or do it in a campground. The whole purpose of the event is to raise awareness and acceptance of hemps gifts within the WHOLE community. It’s not just a party for the hippies to get stoned at. So those are compromises Normal Bean isn’t gonna make as General of Community Unity for the Hemp Army.
